Cutting of mild steel is no more a tough task, with the
emergence of the latest oxy-fuel cutting
technique, it’s easier than ever. The oxy-fuel cutting process is used for
cutting mild steel, mild steel constitutes 98% iron, 1% manganese, .3% carbon.
Though mild steel has various other metals but in a smaller amount.
Elements that remain unaffected by the oxy-fuel current
process include phosphorus, sulfur, Silicon, Manganese, molybdenum, nickel,
chromium, stainless, aluminum, copper, brass. Oxidization of metal terminates
the efficacy of this process by forming a protective crust on metal. The
process can treat only those metals which have a melting point lower than the
base metal. The other such requirement for the process is: maintaining the
ignition temperature during the oxidation reaction between the metal and the
oxygen jet and production of gaseous reaction to prevent dilution.
Quality oxy-fuel cut
gives a perfect cutting result:
Trimming of Square top corner with minimum radius, Cutting
face square in the relation of the top surface and face flat from top to
bottom, drawing vertical draglines for a cleaner and smoother surface, and no
slag on the bottom edge.
Mild steel is being used in various industries to cut mild
steel, this includes cutting of bulb profiles and square tubes, T-bars, flat
strips, H-beams, tubes, etc.
Oxy-fuel cutting
for mild steel is of great worth as it brings extreme accuracy, possibly trim
even the thickest material, and is done in low operational cost. It has a small
torch that can reach small spots for higher accuracy. The process is simple
with preheating, piercing, cutting, but is also time taking with other minute
detailing it needs in between.
How does it work?
To start with the process, the torch with a fueling gas or
flame cutting technique preheats the steel to the ignition temperature of
around 950°C. At such a high
temperature, the metal lost its properties making it solid and here the oxygen
is directed to pierce through the nozzle. This lets it undergo exothermic
reaction which transforms the pre-heated steel into oxidized liquid steel. Now,
the involved robot performs the flame cutting to produce accurate cuts at a
continuous speed. It helps them in reaching out to the corners.
This helps in delivering perfection and precision to metal.
Besides, it helps in trimming bevels and thick material. Moreover, it’s a
cost-effective process and is a safer alternative to other such processes. For more
